Privacy policy

Liminon is built local-first on purpose. This page explains exactly what that means: what the desktop app never sends anywhere, what this website collects when you join the waitlist, and nothing more than that.

Overview

This policy covers two separate things: the Liminon desktop app for macOS, and this website (liminon.ai), including the beta waitlist form. It describes what the app and site actually do today, not a generic template.

1. The Liminon app: your research data stays on your Mac

When you use Liminon, your recordings, transcripts, codes, and notes are saved in a project bundle (a .qproj folder) at a location you choose on your own disk — the same way any native Mac document works. That folder holds a local SQLite database and, if you import them, your original audio or video files. None of it is uploaded to us. We run no server that stores your research content, and the app has no account system that could tie your data to you.

  • Transcription and speaker separation run entirely on-device, using on-device models (WhisperKit and FluidAudio) — no audio or transcript text is sent anywhere to produce them.
  • AI-assisted coding and theme discovery run through a small language model on your own Mac via Ollama. Liminon does not send your interview content to OpenAI, Anthropic, or any other cloud AI provider — there is no such integration in the app.
  • The app does not collect usage analytics, telemetry, or crash reports.

You can export a project (JSON, Word, PDF, or Excel, depending on the feature) or delete it at any time by removing its .qproj folder. Deleting it removes the data completely, because nowhere else holds a copy.

2. License activation

A purchased license key is verified offline on your Mac and stored in the macOS Keychain, scoped to the Liminon app. Activating a license does not send your key, your identity, or any usage data back to us — there is no license server to phone home to.

3. Checking for updates

Liminon can check whether a newer version is available. This only happens when you trigger it yourself from the app — it is not an automatic background check — and it fetches a small public version file from liminon.ai. The request carries nothing beyond what any web request needs at the network level: no account ID, no machine identifier, no usage data.

4. This website (liminon.ai)

Waitlist form. If you join the beta waitlist, we collect the email address you enter, plus the role and computer-type options you select (for example, "PhD student" and "Mac, Apple Silicon"). This is stored in our hosting provider's data store and used only to email you about beta access and launch pricing. We don't sell it, rent it, or share it with advertisers. Email [email protected] at any time to have your address removed.

Analytics. We use a privacy-configured Google Analytics (IP addresses anonymized) to understand aggregate traffic to this website — which pages get visited, roughly how many people, which countries. This is website traffic data only; it has no connection to anything you do inside the Liminon app.

Website analytics (PostHog). We also use PostHog to see how visitors move through this website and to measure specific actions — for example, clicking the beta download button, submitting the waitlist form, or clicking a pricing button. PostHog identifies a visitor only by a randomly generated ID stored in your browser; it is not tied to your name or email, and it never sees the content of anything you type into the waitlist form or anything from inside the Liminon app. We don't use it for ad targeting or share this data with advertisers.

Cookies. Google Analytics above sets a cookie. PostHog does not use cookies — it stores its random visitor ID in your browser's local storage instead. Neither tool runs advertising pixels or cross-site trackers.

5. Third parties

This site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which processes standard web traffic (IP address, request logs) as our infrastructure provider. If you install Ollama to use AI features, that software runs under its own terms — Liminon only talks to it on your local machine (localhost), never over the internet.

6. Children's privacy

Liminon is professional research software and is not directed at children. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

7. Changes to this policy

If we change how the app or website handles data, we'll update this page and its date. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.

8. Contact

Questions about this policy, or a request to remove waitlist data: [email protected].
